Huachuma

The Master Plant

Cactus San Pedro

The Huachuma cactus (Trichocereus macrogonus var. pachanoi) is a so-called Teacher plant, a plant animated by a high intelligence whose genius has the potential to awaken our wisdom and teach us about life and Creation.

It is also known as a visionary plant with the potential to open our inner eye to realities that reside in the invisible world, in other dimensions and spaces. In particular, it enables us to take a new - or different - look at our inner and outer world, and to change - or broaden - our perspective, by helping us to open our vision and awareness to a much wider field of perception than that which is usually ours, and of our mind, which functions in a linear and limited way.

It is a medicine (medicinal) plant, with benefits that include physical, emotional and spiritual healing. It should be pointed out, however, that it is not a substitute for any conventional treatment. In particular, it works on our light body and architecture, releasing energy blockages, which most often and primarily result in emotional suffering and the closure of our heart chakra.

It is a plant of power in the strict sense of the word, helping us to transcend the duality in which we live as human beings (to be noted that our kingdom of life is not the only one to experience duality) and to reclaim our inner sovereignty by promoting the awakening of our consciousness and the illumination of our Being.

It is an entheogenic plant, which means that it exalts the experience of the spiritual dimension of our Being and All That Is, as well as the experience of our divine nature.

In short, it belongs to the category of plants that Amazonian shamanic tradition calls Master Plants, which are at once teachers, visionaries, medicines, empowerers and entheogens.

This same category also includes the Amazonian liana Ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi), among many other plants.

Origin & Planetary Mission

The Huachuma cactus is native to the Andes mountain range in South America. It generally grows on high plateaux between 2,000 and 3,000 metres, but is now also cultivated at other altitudes and locations.

In Peru, the spiritual and medicinal use of this cactus dates back more than 4,000 years. It was considered a gift from heaven by the Chavín civilisation (1,000 BC - 200 BC), considered to be the mother culture of the pre-Columbian civilisations of the Andes, including the Inca.

At the Chavín de Huántar archaeological site, a stele has been found engraved with a figure holding a cactus (see image here). From the 16th century onwards, during the Spanish conquest of the Americas, Catholic missionaries brought Christian paintings to the New World. It is said that among these were paintings depicting the Apostle Peter holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. It seems that, under pressure from the evangelisers, the natives involved in rituals with the Huachuma cactus chose Saint Peter as the biblical figure of reference, because of the analogy with their sacred and beloved cactus, a celestial gift from their deity or deities opening the gates of their paradise.

This explains the origin of the name San Pedro cactus (Saint Peter in Spanish) under which the Huachuma is best known.

The native people continued to practise their beliefs and to perpetuate their spiritual and healing rituals with this ancestral cactus in secret, usually under cover of the night.

Today, the legal framework governing its cultivation, use, preparation and consumption differs from one state and continent to another. In Peru, like the Ayahuasca liana, the Huachuma cactus is an integral part of the country's cultural heritage and is completely legal.

Having said all this, it's worth noting that the Huachuma cactus is one of those beings holding a planetary mission to contribute to the awakening and fulfilment of consciousness, in accordance with the plan of Source.

Ayahuasca or Huachuma?

These are two Master Plants that are today widely used by those who are called to work on their own liberation and personal development with the help of the plant realm. They are rather opposed in their nature and way of working, but perfectly complementary.

Ayahuasca, which is characterised by a maternal and feminine energy, leads the way. It takes the initiative and direction of the healing movement, guiding and controlling the inner journey. The person is completely carried away by the plant's intelligence into the landscapes of his/her unconscious that are ready to emerge and reveal themselves to his/her knowledge. Suddenly, you understand, see and perceive things differently; you become aware of and realise what, until then, had remained misunderstood, unnoticed, in the shadows. The invisible becomes visible and everything makes more sense. The plant shows you and teaches you. It asks you to open your heart and your mind, and to release the emotions, memories, beliefs and suffering trapped in those that have become energetic knots in the fabric and architecture of your Being, causing pain, blockages, dysfunction and illness.

The magic of healing takes place.

The work of liberation with the Ayahusaca liana, which is most often combined with the leaves of the Chakruna plant in an ancestral brew, requires you to open up your receptivity, to let go completely and to trust in the plant's intelligence, which guides you on what could be compared to a plane journey - which normally lasts five hours on average - where you are the passenger.

The journey with Huachuma, on the other hand, could be compared to a bus journey - which lasts an average of ten to twelve hours - where you are the driver and the spirit of the plant is your co-pilot. It requires a more precise intention to work, and the determination to progress along the path of evolution and to work towards that goal.

Huachuma, in its fatherly and masculine nature, promotes strength of will, the power of the being and of the creative act. It accompanies you as you contemplate the scenarios and horizons of your life and inner and outer realities, it opens the doors and channels of perception for you, it stimulates and awakens your inner wisdom and asks you to release any emotional suffering by becoming aware of it and accepting it deeply. It doesn't do the work that's designed to empower you and to sharpen your ability to illuminate your Being and excel in the art of dissolving duality, i.e. everything that isn't open to the light of love. You have to do that. It gives you the support of its strength and genius, it works on your multidimensional nature and encourages the opening and blossoming of your sacred heart.

You become the magician of your own healing.

In conclusion, it should be noted that, like Huachuma, the Peyote cactus also contains the psychoactive substance of mescaline, among other alkaloids, but in much higher concentrations. It grows mainly in arid and desert areas of Mexico. However, because of its slow growth and intensive harvesting, it is considered to be in danger of extinction in the wild.

Terra Shamana fully subscribes to the component of the universal right of people to self-determination relating to free access to medicinal herbs, plants and trees for the well-being of individuals and communities.

That said, it encourages the use of Ancestral Medicines only in ways that respect their genius and do not impact the balance and harmony of the Earth and its ecosystems.

Huachuma & Its Potential

Huachuma cactus is linked to the sun's energy. It helps us to connect with the heart of the Sun (whereas Ayahuasca encourages connection with the heart of the Earth).

It teaches us how to be the bearer of our own light.

It encourages us to open up our creative power and strengthen our willpower.

It advocates alignment with inner power and wisdom, and asks us to return to the Source for understanding and comfort. It encourages us to position ourselves and act in life in accordance with our supreme good, and to be the guardians of our values and our path.

It pushes us along the path to self-fulfillment, to the fulfillment of our projects, to our well-being and happiness in life, all while being aligned between Heaven and Earth.

Ultimately, this medicinal plant is an excellent tool for deepening our self-knowledge - through sincerity, acceptance, compassion and love - and the world we create for ourselves, as well as our knowledge of our own divine nature.

It also supports our communication with our spiritual guides, in particular, as well as opening up our sensitivity to nature.

Finally, this cactus does not cause hallucinations or major unpleasant sensations in the body (as might be the case with other ancestral medicines), nor does it lead to dependency.

It is driven by a benevolent intelligence that encourages experiences of joy, love and conscious connection with the quantum field and All That Is.

<< Gratitude for Terra Shamana, which offers ceremonies with sacred plants in a safe setting filled with sacredness.

The facilitator accompanied me delicately in the work done with the abuelito, attentive to the process underway, while respecting the limits of my personal bubble. It was a beautiful work in and through the heart, a dancing oscillation between the subtle and manifested worlds, with the help of the Huachuma, which unfolded like a gentle, constant sun to carry my words and gestures throughout the lunar cycle that followed, set to the facilitator's songs of gratitude that were still resonating.

A reconnection with my soul, a personal work supported by that of the group, a time-space to strengthen the weaving of the threads of light that link me to those I love>>.
